The geographic spread of participation is particularly encouraging. While London and the South East traditionally account for a large share of registrations, this year has seen significant growth in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as in the English regions that have historically been underrepresented in STEM engagement programmes. The British Science Association attributes this partly to the government’s devolution agenda, which has empowered regional education authorities to promote the programme through their own networks, and partly to the post-pandemic recovery of school budgets, which has freed up capacity for enrichment activities.
The impact of British Science Week extends beyond the ten days of the programme itself. Research conducted by the Association, in partnership with several university education departments, has found that schools that participate consistently over multiple years see measurable improvements in students’ attitudes toward science, their confidence in conducting experiments and their likelihood of choosing STEM subjects at GCSE and A-level. The effect is particularly pronounced among girls and among students from disadvantaged backgrounds, two groups that have historically been underrepresented in scientific careers.
Teachers, the unsung heroes of the programme, have responded with characteristic pragmatism and enthusiasm. The head of science at a comprehensive school in Bradford described the activity packs as “a godsend” in a year when curriculum pressures and staffing shortages had left little room for creative planning. “I can hand a pack to a newly qualified teacher and know that they will deliver a brilliant lesson,” the head said. “That is worth its weight in gold.”
The programme also includes a public engagement strand, with museums, libraries, universities and community organisations hosting events for families and adults. The Natural History Museum in London is running a week-long festival of talks, demonstrations and hands-on activities. The Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire is offering free evening stargazing sessions. The National Library of Wales is hosting an exhibition on the history of scientific discovery in Wales, from the medieval physicians of Myddfai to the contemporary researchers at Cardiff and Aberystwyth.
British Science Week will run in March 2026, but the planning, the packing and the volunteer recruitment are already well underway. In warehouses in Swindon and Glasgow, boxes of test tubes, magnifying glasses, circuit kits and seed packets are being assembled and labelled for dispatch to schools in every corner of the country. In offices in London and Edinburgh, coordinators are matching volunteer scientists with classrooms, checking DBS certificates and confirming travel arrangements.
It is unglamorous, logistical, deeply necessary work. And in a country that sometimes struggles to celebrate its scientific heritage with the same enthusiasm it reserves for its sporting and cultural achievements, the sight of 12,000 schools raising their hands and saying “yes, we want this” is a quiet, powerful statement about the kind of future Britain wants to build.
