British Science Week, the annual ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, has opened registrations for its 2026 edition, and the response from the education sector has been nothing short of extraordinary. More than 12,000 schools across the United Kingdom have signed up to participate, a 30 per cent increase on last year and the highest number since the event was established in its current format in 2015.<\/p>\n
The programme, coordinated by the British Science Association with funding from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and a consortium of corporate sponsors, provides schools with free activity packs, lesson plans, experiment guides and access to a network of volunteer scientists, engineers and researchers who visit classrooms to demonstrate their work and answer questions. The packs are tailored to different age groups, from early years through to sixth form, and are designed to complement the national curriculum while encouraging the kind of open-ended, inquiry-based learning that formal timetabling often struggles to accommodate.<\/p>\n
This year’s theme, “Science in Our Streets,” invites students to explore the science embedded in their immediate environments: the physics of a roundabout, the chemistry of a bakery, the biology of a garden pond, the mathematics of a bus timetable. The theme was chosen deliberately to counter the perception, prevalent among some young people, that science is an abstract, laboratory-bound pursuit disconnected from the texture of everyday life.<\/p>\n
The British Science Association’s chief executive noted that the record uptake reflected both a genuine enthusiasm among teachers and a growing recognition of the importance of scientific literacy in a world shaped by climate change, artificial intelligence and public health challenges. “Teachers tell us that their students are hungry for this kind of learning,” the chief executive said. “They want to understand how things work. They want to ask questions and test answers. They want to feel that science is something they can do, not just something they are told about.”<\/p>\n
The corporate sponsorship model has been instrumental in scaling the programme. Major pharmaceutical, engineering and technology firms have contributed funding, materials and, crucially, the time of their employees, who volunteer as classroom ambassadors. A leading aerospace company, for example, is sending teams of engineers to schools in the West Country and the North East to run workshops on aerodynamics and materials science. A major supermarket chain is funding food science activities in primary schools, teaching children about nutrition, preservation and the chemistry of cooking.<\/p>\n

The geographic spread of participation is particularly encouraging. While London and the South East traditionally account for a large share of registrations, this year has seen significant growth in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as in the English regions that have historically been underrepresented in STEM engagement programmes. The British Science Association attributes this partly to the government’s devolution agenda, which has empowered regional education authorities to promote the programme through their own networks, and partly to the post-pandemic recovery of school budgets, which has freed up capacity for enrichment activities.<\/p>\n
The impact of British Science Week extends beyond the ten days of the programme itself. Research conducted by the Association, in partnership with several university education departments, has found that schools that participate consistently over multiple years see measurable improvements in students’ attitudes toward science, their confidence in conducting experiments and their likelihood of choosing STEM subjects at GCSE and A-level. The effect is particularly pronounced among girls and among students from disadvantaged backgrounds, two groups that have historically been underrepresented in scientific careers.<\/p>\n
Teachers, the unsung heroes of the programme, have responded with characteristic pragmatism and enthusiasm. The head of science at a comprehensive school in Bradford described the activity packs as “a godsend” in a year when curriculum pressures and staffing shortages had left little room for creative planning. “I can hand a pack to a newly qualified teacher and know that they will deliver a brilliant lesson,” the head said. “That is worth its weight in gold.”<\/p>\n
The programme also includes a public engagement strand, with museums, libraries, universities and community organisations hosting events for families and adults. The Natural History Museum in London is running a week-long festival of talks, demonstrations and hands-on activities. The Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire is offering free evening stargazing sessions. The National Library of Wales is hosting an exhibition on the history of scientific discovery in Wales, from the medieval physicians of Myddfai to the contemporary researchers at Cardiff and Aberystwyth.<\/p>\n
British Science Week will run in March 2026, but the planning, the packing and the volunteer recruitment are already well underway. In warehouses in Swindon and Glasgow, boxes of test tubes, magnifying glasses, circuit kits and seed packets are being assembled and labelled for dispatch to schools in every corner of the country. In offices in London and Edinburgh, coordinators are matching volunteer scientists with classrooms, checking DBS certificates and confirming travel arrangements.<\/p>\n
It is unglamorous, logistical, deeply necessary work.
